Immunity is the ability of body to counter or resist harmful pathogens/ micro organisms entering our body from outside. Our body had line of defense against any invading micro organisms like bacteria, virus ,fungi etc. We have white blood cells or leukocytes in our body which are of mainly two types; B cells and T cells which create barrier for foreign invading cells and fight them to protect our body.
Immunity is mainly of two types active or passive. Active immunity is body’s natural ability and is there for life long as body builds antibodies against the pathogen on exposure from itself or from other organism like we receive some ability genetically and develop tolerance against many flu and diseases and allergies and auto immune disorders and some times we develop it artificially when we are vaccinated like in case of polio where a live pathogen is injected in our body in a very mild form and our body develops immunity against it by developing antibodies this immunity stays with us throughout our lives.
Passive immunity can also be achieved naturally or artificially , an example of natural way is when a fetus gets immunity form mother through breast milk, it stays with the child for 4-6 months after weaning. An example of artificial passive immunity is when we are given antibiotics or antiviral medicine for any infection when we are ill, this leads to generation of antibodies in our body against that infection and the effect stays for few weeks to few months. Passive immunity is always temporary and has gives no memory to our cells.
Now lets discuss how we can boost our immunity. Its correct that we all are born with a certain map and immunity level which differentiates us from others and is reason behind why one person falls ill on same level of exposure to bacteria and other person doesn’t. But the good part is that we can increase our immunity by eating right foods.
Yes that’s right certain foods amplify our immune systems and act as a shield between us and disease. Here is the list of super foods for our strong immunity.
Vitamin C rich foods like citrus fruits; Amla (goose berrries), oranges, lemons, grape fruits are excellent sources of antioxidants which boost our immunity. It is advisable to add a lemon or amla powder in water and consume it once everyday. One can have them as fresh fruit as well.
Green leafy vegetables: Green vegetables are essential source of multi vitamins and micronutrients which maintain right nutrition in our diets .
Ginger and garlic: They are powerhouse of antioxidants and have strong anti bacterial properties. add them liberally to your diet and increase your immunity.
Turmeric: turmeric milk has been backed up by our grandmothers to counter any pain or injury. Science also proves it right, it has anti inflammatory properties. Curcumin, a yellowish color substance found in turmeric can modulate activation of T cells and is very useful in allergies, flues, injuries, arthritis etc.
Tea: yes, be it green , black or white tea or coffee, the polyphenols and flavanoids present in them have capacity to detoxify body and kill free radicals.
Pomegranate juice: this juice has been used my many mothers to boost their children’s immunity to fight infections and rightly so as it has lots of micro nutrients.
Almonds: All nuts are powerhouse of nutrients but almonds have lots of iron, protein, vitamins and antioxidants which helps in boosting immunity.
Beet root juice: beetroots help in raising immunity by providing vitamin C, increasing iron absorbtiona nad increasing body’s ability to fight.
Along with the foods which increase our immunity, we should also stay from the foods which decrease pour immunity and make us prone to diseases.
Cold drinks and soda leach calcium from our bones and make our body weak.
